Steam and Water Heating Systems
General
Many production systems in industry require large amounts of heat to be either supplied or dissipated. Water (and steam) has become established as the heat transfer medium, due to a whole series of advantages. Unfortunately, it also has fundamental negative properties. Water, mostly under pressure, causes calcination and corrosion when in contact with the metallic surfaces of the pipes, and thus reduces the efficiency and lifespan of the systems.
Aqua-Concept, with its modern, hydrazine and phosphate-free products, provides significantly increased lifespan of steam and hot water systems, using targeted treatment of the water against corrosion and lime.
Problem and Solution
Water has become established as an environmentally friendly heat transfer agent, due to a whole series of advantages. Its high heat capacity and unmatched low price are the decisive advantages relative to other heat transfer media. Water is thus an indispensable resource in many industrial processes and is often transported to the point of use under pressure as hot water or steam, often heated to well over 100C. Steam is often consumed in processes, so that new feed water is constantly needed.
The use of water, however, creates two fundamental technical problems:
Corrosive effect of the water on materials and metallic surfaces
In particular, oxygen corrosion in water systems and buildup of deposits can increase potential hazards. For this reason, technical directives have been developed for the operation of steam systems (TRD 611 – Technical Regulations for Steam Vessels).
Raw water for steam and hot water systems is subject to wide variations. The quality and composition vary, and make it impossible to find an optimal “off-the-shelf” water treatment.
