Sprinkler systems
General
Fire protection systems, especially sprinkler systems, protect lives, property, and buildings. Regular maintenance and inspection of these technical systems is therefore indispensable, in order to ensure functional security. The extinguishing agent, usually pressurized water, causes corrosion, calcification, and microbe growth upon contact with the metallic surfaces, which in turn can lead to increased corrosion and blockage of the pipes.
Aqua-Concept, with products that are inspected and approved by the VDS (Association of German Property Insurers), provides significantly increased lifespan of the systems, using targeted treatment of the water against corrosion, lime, and microbes.
Problem and Solution
Water is easily and generally inexpensively available in large quantities for use as an extinguishing agent. It thus lends itself to use as an extinguishing agent for structural fires, and for rapid extinguishing of large surfaces. The advantages arising from the use of water outweigh by far the associated disadvantages, since the latter can be neutralized by technical and chemical means.
The most common technical water problems in the operation of sprinkler systems are:
- Corrosive effect of the water on metallic materials
- Verkalkung/Salzablagerung
- Mikrobenwachstum verursachen Korrosion und Verstopfungen
The weakest point is the metal pipes, which are attacked chiefly by the oxygen dissolved in the water, and corrode. This means that, during a functional test or when charging the system with water, deposited rust or lime particles can come loose and plug the pipelines and valves. This results in weakening of the pipelines at certain points, which means that these sites can no longer bear the water pressure over long periods of time. The system loses water, which leads to considerable loss of functionality of the fire protection system, and usually to expensive water damage.
